Today’s guest is Dr David Hamilton, a scientist, a sought-after speaker, a kindness advocate, one of the mind-body experts featured in the brilliant HEAL documentary AND the author of 10 books, including previous BOTM I Heart Me. Not bad for someone who failed his first English exam.

We love David because he is super intelligent, but also super passionate about breaking down complicated science into easy to understand ‘stuff’ (his word!) that anyone can use to feel better in the every day.

He’s also somebody who has worked hard to overcome his own difficulties with self-love and self-esteem, and so when he tells us that being kind can give our life more meaning AND scientifically improve our wellbeing, we listen.

In today’s podcast we cover:

  • How we’re biologically wired for kindness, compassion and connection

  • The 5 side effects of kindness, including how being kind improves your physical and mental health

  • How the pandemic has meant more social distance but actually reduced ‘emotional’ distance

  • The idea of internal vs external self-esteem

  • How doing self-development work transformed David’s relationship with himself (and can work for you too)

  • How having a sense of meaning in your life can reduce anxiety about the future

  • Why even the experts are just ‘winging it’ most of the time
