BOOK OF THE MONTH: DECEMBER 2019
ABOUT THE BOOk
How to stop saying yes
when you can't, you shouldn't,
or you just don't want to
Sarah Knight is the Queen of No: no to a single extraneous f*ck given, to unwanted obligations, overcommitting, and overcomplicating her life.
For Sarah, saying no is easy. For the rest of us, it's stress-inducing, blood pressure-raising, teeth-grinding hard. But it doesn't have to be. F**k No! is filled with tips, techniques, and practical strategies that will arm you with not only permission to decline, but plenty of ammunition for doing so.
An encyclopedia of examples, a cornucopia of comebacks, a plethora of polite replies: if you're looking to say no (and without being selfish, unlikeable, or mired in missing out), you've come to the right place.
WHY I CHOSE THIS BOOK, by SHELF HELP FOUNDER TONI
Most of us need to get better at saying no, ESPECIALLY during the Holiday season, when our time, money and energy are being pulled in all directions. Being bombarded with invitations is actually a pretty nice situation to be in (hello #firstworldproblem) but learning how to value ourselves and our time is something that comes up time and time again during Shelf Help meetups, whether that’s saying no to toxic friends and their dramas, setting boundaries at work, or even being firmer with OURSELVES when we start thinking about ditching that all-important self-care routine as soon as Happy Hour comes around.
-
This book is designed to help us TAKE ACTION another area that I, and lots of our members, need a bit of a steer on. We can read all of the books, but unless we actually DO something as a result of all that reading nothing much will change. This book is filled with hundreds of concrete examples of easy ways to say ‘no’ (turns out it is actually quite easy to say no when you know how) and author Sarah’s personal anecdotes and encouraging advice will spur you on to get going ASAP.

It’s f**king funny! Yes, it’s a bit (lot) sweary, but self-help doesn’t always need to be super serious, guys. In fact, Shelf Help is all about celebrating working on ourselves and making self-help more accessible - and what better way to do that than with a smile on our faces?

ABOUT THE AUTHOr: SARAH KNIGHT
Sarah says: “I'm a writer, editor, and recovering perfectionist. I spent fifteen years working in the New York publishing industry where I was privileged to edit talented authors such as Jessica Knoll, Gillian Flynn, Emily Nagoski, James Lee Burke, Chris Cleave, and many, many more. In 2015 I left it all behind in pursuit of more sunshine, less stress, and a daily abundance of pina coladas - moving with my husband from Brooklyn to the Dominican Republic.
”So far all of the books in my "No F*cks Given Guides" (NFGG) series - THE LIFE-CHANGING MAGIC OF NOT GIVING A F*CK, GET YOUR SH*T TOGETHER, YOU DO YOU, and CALM THE F*CK DOWN - have been international bestsellers.
“In the NFGGs, I write about mental health, setting goals, taking risks, getting motivated, getting organised, and all the usual self-help stuff - but I do it with profanity and silly charts and long-form analogies involving cartoon chipmunks. What can I say? It seems to be working. My latest book, F**k No! is exactly what it sounds like: a manual for saying no, meaning it, and being heard. Who doesn’t need a little help in that department?”
