BOOK OF THE Moment: MAY/JUNE 2021
HOW TO DO THE WORK
For the next two months the brilliant How To Do The Work by Dr Nicole LePera (aka The Holistic Psychologist) will be our featured read and we’ll be working through it as a community, supporting each other as this book and Dr Nicole’s self-healing work guides us through recognising our patterns, healing from our past and creating our selves.
We’d love you to read along with us, and on this page you’ll find a suggested reading schedule as well as links to get the book in paperback, kindle and audible.
Each week we’ll be sharing content to help support you on your self-help and self-healing journey via Instagram, Facebook, our newsletter and blog. And we’ll also be supporting your reading with a series of online meetups (#mondayclub!) and events, including Zoom book clubs, a guided meditation with Swami Saradananda and a workshop on mental resilience with Hazel Gale.
You can join the fun for free simply by following our content, reading along and keeping yourself accountable with our Sunday and Monday night check-ins on Instagram and in our Facebook group. OR, if you’re really ready to commit to yourself and supercharge your healing and growth you can join our digital membership, the shelf help. Clubhouse, for extra support, exclusive content and Live community meetups as we journey through this incredible Work together.

THREE REASONS I CHOSE THIS BOOK
by shelf help. founder Toni
It’s holistic healing, taking in all parts of our selves - mind, body and soul. As The Holistic Psychologist Dr Nicole’s work combines traditional psychology with the latest scientific research and healing modalities - my dream trio. And just like shelf help., her work and this book is all about looking at the whole part when we’re looking at making change in one area and managing our mental wellbeing. Doing 'The Work’ of course includes accessing and addressing limiting beliefs and our relationship with ourselves and our families - now and then - but is also asks us to look at what we eat, how we sleep, how we manage our nervous system, how we spend our time and who with. Because it’s all connected, and it can all make a difference.
It’s a reminder that we can heal ourselves. This book contains loads of case studies of people who have made small lifestyle changes or discovered that glimmer of insight that ultimately changed their lives, as well as simple - and free - techniques that all of us can start using right now including movement, meditation, easy breath work and - my favourite - Future Self Journaling (FSJing).
Interdependence is the goal. Self-help doesn’t need to be lonely. As shelf help. has grown I’ve seen time and time again how inner work is made so much more powerful when we come together to cheerlead and support each other. By reading this book now we’ll also be joining a larger, global conversation - and movement - of millions of #selfhealers connected via Dr. Nicole’s hugely popular Instagram account (@the.holistic.psychologist ha 3.7million fans and counting) as well as being able to connect directly with the author as she delves into each chapter and shares her tools of transformation as part of the SelfHealer Soundboard podcast that launched just one week ago AND a Future Self Journaling Challenge that she’s holding for the month on May 2021.
ABOUT THE BOOk
As a clinical psychologist, Dr Nicole LePera often found herself frustrated by the limitations of traditional psychotherapy. Wanting more for her patients - and for herself - she began a journey to develop a united philosophy of mental, physical and spiritual health that equips people with the interdisciplinary tools necessary to heal themselves. After experiencing the life-changing results herself, she began to share what she'd learned with others - and soon The Holistic Psychologist was born.
Now Dr LePera is ready to share her much-requested protocol with the world. In How to Do the Work, she offers both a manifesto for self-healing and an essential guide to creating a more vibrant, authentic and joyful life. Drawing on the latest research from a diversity of scientific fields and healing modalities, Dr LePera helps us recognise how adverse experiences and trauma in childhood live with us, resulting in whole body dysfunction - activating harmful stress responses that keep us stuck engaging in patterns of codependency, emotional immaturity and trauma bonds. Unless addressed, these self-sabotaging behaviours can quickly become cyclical, leaving people feeling unhappy, unfulfilled and unwell.
In How to Do the Work, Dr LePera offers listeners the support and tools that will allow them to break free from destructive behaviours to reclaim and recreate their lives. Nothing short of a paradigm shift, this is a celebration of empowerment that will forever change the way we approach mental health and self-care.
